Rosaleen knows why she is there. She is made to turn around by the stern cane-wielding Miss Simpson, who hands her a note of instructions to read aloud, which tells how Rosaleen is to accept her caning. She is then bent over and wedged, before being caned to tears and made to count every last stinging stroke. By the end, she is crying and marked from the vicious punishment of the cane.
